On Chippendale's kick drum he has a little black pedal-looking thing. I imagine it's the "tone maker" listed in the Hypermagic notes. What are these? Or what is that in particular? I think it's what he uses in "Infinity Farm" and in the background, slowly rising, in "Magic Mountain."

its called a drum synth (sometimes spelled synce),
he has a bias, but there are identical ones by coron, asama, etc....
the most common is coron ds7 drum synce. it creates a pitch when it sense vibration. you can tweak the decay, pitch, rate, sweep, etc...
he tweaks with it at the end of "dead cowboy" and he also uses it on some other tracks.
mindflayers music is based around this unit as well.

me too. i was always like"damn, Puffy shure is good at oscilating feadback!"
me and a friend helped Bolt carry in equipment at the Austin show and we got to watch Chip set up his stuff. we basically got to see exactly how he does all tat stuff. very intricate for a drummer for sure. tone bending and shit while he plays drums...damn.
