oh my gad, thank you!

ive been out of work for over a month with a broken wrist, spending my dys reading in the sun and drinking beer. i live in PDX but i've been home for a week on Vaca, and last night i saw BPUS in providence for my birthday party.

i had a wonderful birth-day today. im staying at my parents house in attleboro, MA, and they live in the most beautiful house in a nice secluded part of town. My mom dad and bro let me sleep in, and when i woke up my dad poured everyone toast glasses full of homebrew beer that he brewed, and timed so that it would be ready to open on my birthday, over a month ago. God bless both my parents for creating me, and being such beautiful sweet people. and same for my bro.

thanks 19 for noticing, im still looking forward to hearing more about your solar oven successes and failures. i dont know how solar ovens work, i havnt heard of them before. bust i love to cook and it sounds like a potential way to save $ by not using the oven. thanks for noticing me!

Glad you had such a great birthday!!

okay so solar cooking......based on the same principle as the greenhouse effect: energy enters the cooking chamber in form of sun rays and heat builds up due to the glass covering the box. The interior is painted black in order to facilitate heat buildup.

If you refer back to the original thread, there is a link to a wide variety of cooker designs. Most of them involve some sort of reflective surface, like roof flashing or mirrors, and the color black for better heat absorption. There are also designs for parabolic mirror cookers which would be used more like a burner on your stovetop (as opposed to an oven) and this type of contraption can reach a temperature of 600ºF, whereas the box cookers are more around a top temperature of maaaaybe 300ºF but more likely around 250ºF or even as low as 200ºF.

So I have used mine in other summers to cook a lot of lentils or other legumes and rice...and recently, as I mentioned, I've started using it to cook dead animals ...yeah, I have an attitude about it, I've spent a lot of years not eating meat but the meat animals here I can get to know, if I choose, and I see how lovingly the creatures are treated and the slaughtering process is also quite humane, I have been promised, to I don't have an issue with it. Humans evolved eating meat and, who knows, maybe the carrots are just as conscious as the cows, who can say? For me, it boils down to ethics this year, other years I've been totally disgusted by meat and other other years, I've eaten a lot of crap meat. My ethics are flexible....and denial a potent tool. You, working as a butcher and all, obviously have no issues with it.

Anyway, the whole chicken that I baked turned out wonderfully and I've also had good luck cooking lamb cut into stew sized pieces. I cooked a hamburger too, but it released most of the juice and fat due to the low temperature/slow process. It was good though, not to worry! Just, really really small by the time it was ready to eat. Also pies and cakes and cookies, they work with this.

Again, the cookers are allegedly quite easy to make, although as I said in the original thread, I purchased mine because I wanted the electrical backup and also I'm lazy when I have money to spend. But in any case, FOR EXAMPLE, what could be easier than an inflated innertube set on a piece of plywood with glass covering the donut hole in the middle (the oven area)? Pretty darned clever!

I totally recommend trying it out! I am always so disappointed when there is not enough sunshine to cook. I really like this method a lot!
